The public hasn’t been allowed on Ross Island since mining launched in 1926, leaving no opportunity to see the extent of the industrial waste or restoration work.

Earlier this week, Craig Jacobs, who has worked at Ross Island Sand & Gravel for 49 years, led The Oregonian/OregonLive on a rare visit to the island as the 100-year-old company owned by aging industrialist Robert Pamplin Jr. prepares to sell it.

A group of investors has secured the option to buy Ross Island from the company as part of an informal proposal to fill the lagoon with contaminated sediment from the Portland Harbor Superfund site, seal it and then replant the island, eventually turning it into a public park.
