The moment we saw this image of the tomstuartsmith 2010 gold medal winning garden at Chelsea Flower show we knew it was the feel we wanted for our pool.

THE FEEL

We originally wanted a natural swimming pool, but because we’re in a flood plain and the only bit of land high enough was fairly narrow, we didn’t have the right space for one, which we were incredibly disappointed about.

But Tom’s garden brought back all of our hope, because suddenly we could see how it might be possible to create a normal pool, but with more of the feel of a natural pool.

THE COLOUR OF THE WATER

Shortly afterwards, we went to stay with friends for the weekend in a beautiful house in the south of France, which had this gorgeous pool in the garden.

We absolutely fell in love with the long slim shape and the stunning pale green colour of the water.

It was then that I realized that they’d created the green water by using yellow sand coloured stone to line it.

Water is blue, so blue combined with a yellow liner makes it green! I mean, who knew?! But it’s so obvious when you realize it.

We couldn’t afford stone, so we used a sand colored, textured liner instead.

Lots of people were VERY skeptical about our colour choice, but I stood firm, holding onto my colour theory. So I was really nervous as we started filling it with water.

But it worked!

The whole area is still a bit of a work in progress, and you’ll see from my Stories at the moment that I’m now pointing the long wall at the back of the pool, having finally finished cladding it in limestone.

But anyway, do you like the green water, or are you more of a classic turquoise person for a pool?
