One of the most misunderstood aspects of small Tesla coils is why brief contact with some discharges can be relatively harmless under controlled conditions. The answer comes down to current, frequency, and energy delivery. Human injury from electricity is primarily related to current passing through tissue, especially through the heart or nervous system. Small demonstration Tesla coils usually operate at extremely high frequencies and comparatively low available current. At these frequencies, much of the current tends to travel across the surface of conductive objects rather than deeply through tissue due to the skin effect. Additionally, the total energy stored in each discharge pulse is often very low. The result is that some desktop coils can produce sparks that feel more like heat or a static shock rather than the dangerous sustained current associated with mains electricity.
