The Outsiders on Broadway!

The Outsiders, winner of 4 Tony Awards (including Best Musical), lived up to our Great Expectations!

On the shoulders of the 60s Susie Hinton book and the 80s heartthrob movie, this cool third incarnation unfolds with an original score. Adding the super cool fluid use of common objects like wood planks, tires, and water for set design, the show overflowed with depth. It was so visually engaging.

The Outsiders takes place in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, and centers around the social hierarchy of the affluent “Socs” versus the poor east side “Greasers” or as we come to know them as “The Outsiders”.

This was the perfect show to see after finishing a year of social work school as I looked at this familiar story through a completely new lens.

The music brought the story to life and the plight of the underdog really came through from the original lyrics. Not to mention I always love seeing fellow uofmichigan Wolverines like Sutton James Kaylor and Logan Gray Saad on stage!

But I have to say the most exciting part was having a day of understudies shining through! Josh Strobl (Go Blue!) was awesome as Pony Boy, Victor Carrillo Tracey was excellent as Darrel, but oh my gosh, Brandon Lee Jordan brought the house DOWN as Dallas Winston.

While my mind kept spinning as I considered this poor characters ACEs, my mouth kept dropping from Brandon’s phenomenal acting and singing. Besides talent he brought such gravitas and humility to such a troubled character. I kept wanting him to get back on stage to see what he would do next. I obviously googled him the second it ended only to find he got the role just a week before AND this is his Broadway debut. Make a note of his name, he is going to go far. He was just incredible. 

This authentic relatable story reminds us that there Is “lots of good in the world” even if you’re from the wrong side of town, you just have to “Stay Gold”.
