People in Gilbert saw a pretty crazy scene yesterday after a garbage truck caught fire during its normal pickup route.

According to Gilbert Town Hall, the fire started in the back of the truck while crews were collecting trash. To keep the flames from spreading and potentially destroying the entire vehicle, the driver was forced to dump the load directly into the street while firefighters rushed to the scene.

Officials say lithium-ion batteries are one of the most common causes of garbage truck fires because they can ignite when crushed during pickup. Items like vape batteries, phone batteries and rechargeable devices are not supposed to go in regular trash bins.

Gilbert Fire & Rescue says no injuries were reported and the truck was ultimately saved. 👀

Imagine pulling out of your neighborhood and seeing a pile of burning trash in the middle of the street 😭
