Chandler leaders are expected to vote this week on whether to expand the city’s automated license plate reader camera system across the city 👀

According to discussions during a recent Chandler City Council meeting, the Chandler Police Department first installed 14 license plate reader cameras in 2024 before later approving dozens more across Chandler.

Police say the system has already generated thousands of alerts connected to cases involving stolen vehicles, missing people and active warrants.

During the meeting, council members raised questions about privacy, who can access the data and whether outside agencies could potentially gain access to the system.

Supporters say the cameras help police solve crimes faster, while critics argue the system feels like mass surveillance and raises major privacy concerns.

The vote on extending the city’s contract with Flock Safety is expected this week.
