We added years to human life.

But many of those years are no longer healthy ones.

A major 2026 review published in Cell Metabolism argues that humans now exercise approximately five times less than they did 100 years ago while rates of chronic disease continue climbing worldwide.

The paper connects physical inactivity to the rise of:

• Cardiovascular disease
• Type 2 diabetes
• Cancer
• Cognitive decline
• Chronic inflammation

One of the most important distinctions in the research is the difference between lifespan and healthspan.

Lifespan is how long you live.
Healthspan is how long you remain functional, mobile, cognitively sharp, and free from chronic disease.

The researchers argue that exercise should no longer be viewed simply as fitness or aesthetics.

It is increasingly being understood as a core biological requirement for maintaining human function across multiple systems simultaneously.

Not optimization.
Maintenance.

That framing changes everything.
