Director Boots Riley’s new movie 'I Love Boosters' begins as a heist film set in the world of high fashion and ends up being a treatise about the necessity of collective resistance to capitalist exploitation. For those familiar with Riley’s output, this is not a spoiler.

Riley’s films are prescriptive, designed to make you think and talk about the invisible forces governing society.

“I think he’s done the best thing that you can do with this kind of work,” says Don Cheadle of the director, with whom he was only casually acquainted before being cast in the film. “He’s smuggling in his ideas, and I mean that in the best way. You go to be entertained and accidentally learn something, to have your point of view about something shift.”

The two artists, now fast friends, may not have much history before ‘Boosters,’ but their collaboration feels inevitable, and is an extremely welcome addition to our summer movie lineup.
