Why does Gen Z hate the idea of a 9-5 so much? 

The American Dream playbook assumed an entry-level job actually existed. But for a lot of young workers, that path is harder to access now. 

So when gig work shows up as an alternative, it makes sense — even if online culture glamorizes it and hides how unstable it can be. 

Most people aren't actually choosing between a 9-5 and freelance. They're being routed into whichever one the economy has openings for — which is a sign about how our current economy is doing.
