Number 1 might be controversial, but it needs to be said.

As a general contractor working on everything from 1940’s Tudor revival style homes to flip jobs from the 1980’s we see bathrooms in every state you can imagine.

We love and appreciate a vintage bathroom as much as anyone, but here’s the honest truth:

1. Not every vintage bathroom can be saved. We can appreciate it. We can honor it. But bad plumbing, decaying materials, and water damage aren’t always something you can come back from. The longevity of a home and the safety of those living there are our top priorities. We work with designers and homeowners to keep what we can, but sometimes– you have to call it. 

2. Maybe you’ll want to change the tile in a few years or swap out the hardware. Something you don’t want to be changing all the time? The plumbing behind the walls. Good waterproofing, insulation, and ventilation are essential investments.

3. We loved a mitered stone shower jamb as well, but it’s expensive. Consulting with a designer and stone supplier will give you a sense of what works with your budget. Be intentional with your stone material selection. Select a material that works with your cleaning habits.

4. Tile can take months to ship. Custom vanities take time for carpenters to build. Material, color and design decisions need to be made early on. We know things can change, and we do our best to accommodate, but last minute changes have ripple effects on the cadence of all subsequent trades.

5. There’s a lot to think about before and during a renovation. But the best feeling in the world is when it’s done, not having to think about a thing.
