## Caption

The good news: California's wolf population grew by 10% last year — now up to 55 wolves. 

As of the end of December, there were nine known packs according to a report released last week by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife

The bad news: The number of successful breeding pairs — adult pairs who raised at least two pups to the end of December — declined to just three pairs. 

California's wolves have come a long way since OR-7's historic journey into the state in 2011, but the species still has a way to go to make a full recovery. 

We'll be there every step of the way until they're fully recovered. 

And as a reminder, wolves are protected under both the federal and state Endangered Species Act. It is illegal to intentionally kill any wolves in the state.
