I make Dal and rice in an instant pot quite often, you just need to understand the cooking time and ratio of water and that is the key. Also sometimes I suggest don’t overthink, just do it and what is the worst that will happen? Rice may be overcooked, dal gets undercooked, it’s still worth a try.

Make sure to add 2 cups of water below the trivet and smaller pots and hope this pot in pot method helps you 

So in this video I used 
1 cup toor dal 
1 cup Basmati rice 

Ratio of water 
Basmati Rice ratio 1:1 (1 cup rice : 1 cup water)
Toor dal ratio 1:3 (1 cup dal : 3 cups dal)
