How to Make Perfect Dheeli (Soft & Comforting) Khichdi in the Instant Pot

Khichdi is more than just a meal in an Indian home — it’s pure comfort. I grew up eating it, and now my son loves it just as much. I make khichdi at least once a week, especially on busy workdays. There’s nothing better than coming home to hot, soft khichdi ready on the delayed timer.

Khichdi with kadhi and athanu? Always my favorite combo 🤍

Even though it sounds simple, making soft, flowy (dheeli) khichdi in the Instant Pot can go wrong if the water ratio isn’t right. The key is getting that rice-to-dal-to-water ratio perfect.

I use Surti Kolam or Sona Masoori rice for the best texture.

✅ If Rice & Dal Are Soaked / Using Delayed Timer

Ratio: 1 : 3.5 (rice + dal mixture : water)
Example:
½ cup rice + ½ cup dal = 1 cup mixture
→ Add 3.5 cups water

Cook:
30 minutes on High Pressure
Let it natural release

✅ If Rice & Dal Are NOT Soaked / No Delayed Timer

Ratio: 1 : 5.5 (rice + dal mixture : water)

Cook:
30 minutes on High Pressure
Let it natural release

This method has never failed me — soft, smooth, toddler-friendly khichdi every single time. It’s truly a no-brainer dinner for busy moms.
