Today, we are crowning Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu as our #QueenoftheWeek 👑

Born in Clovis,California and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Liu began skating at just five years old. Her father, a fan of Michelle Kwan and Kristi Yamaguchi, brought her to the Oakland Ice Center thinking skating could be a fun activity for his young daughter. Liu’s passion for the sport quickly took off, and by seven, she was already competing at a national level. 

It wasn’t long before Liu started making history. In 2019, at thirteen years old, she became the youngest U.S. figure skating champion in history. At the championship, she also became the first American woman to land three triple axel jumps. The following year, Liu became the first American woman to land a quadruple lutz jump, earning her back-to-back titles. In 2022, she made her Olympic debut in Beijing. Liu was the youngest person of the U.S. team, and she finished sixth overall that year. 

In April 2022,Liu unexpectedly announced her retirement from competitive skating. Feeling that she was no longer in control of the role skating played in her life and that her identity had become tied to the sport, Liu made the decision to step away and turn her focus to prioritizing her mental health and living life as a teenager. 

In 2026, Liu returned in the Milan Olympic Games where she took home gold in both the women’s singles and team events. Her decision to put skating on pause allowed her to return on her own terms and make skating something joyful in her life again. She came back with more control over her skating experience, sharing that this time around, she wanted to be more involved in the creative process of her programs. Liu also said that decisions regarding how much skating she wanted to do would be in her own hands and she’d back down or ramp it up based on what felt best for her. Liu’s openness about her retirement has been an important reminder for young athletes and beyond that it’s paramount to prioritize their mental health and personal happiness.
