## Caption

What was it like to be the first African American winner after Vanessa Williams. Debbye Turner, Miss America 1990, was this winner. Prior to winning, a friend of hers said, half-jokingly, “You should stop trying. After Vanessa, they’re never gonna let another black girl be Miss America.” 

Debbye goes on to say, “When I won, everyone was waiting for my skeletons to fall out of the closet. Everyone was holding their breath. What’s going to happen with this one?”
