From 1921 - 1984, all pageant winners had been Caucasian. According to Debbye Turner, Miss America 1990, “up into the 50s and 60s, [it was not just a] white-only, but a white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant-only organization. So there was no representation of any diversity." 

Kim Aiken, Miss America 1994, talks about having watched the pageant growing up. She states, "I admired these women. I wanted to be like them. I never thought I could be them. So, the year that Vanessa Williams was crowned. She was me."
