after 11 years of the late show and 9 years of being the #1 in late night, stephen colbert’s last show airs tonight. stephen has been a fixture in late night for the past 21 years, spanning the colbert report (2005-2014) and the late show (2015-2026) — prior to that, being a writer and correspondent on the daily show with jon stewart for 8 years. what’s frustrating is how late night is often framed as “no longer profitable” while other parts of the industry continue to absorb massive budgets, restructuring, and risk without the same level of scrutiny. cbs and paramount global claiming that late night television is no longer profitable while greenlighting huge projects, paying out huge settlements, consistently merging companies over and over again — sounds to me like colbert’s show isn’t the problem, it’s your own financial decisions. it raises a bigger question about how decisions are actually being made in entertainment right now, and what gets prioritized when legacy formats start to shift. for a show that’s been the most-watched in its category for nearly a decade, it’s hard not to feel like the explanation is more complicated than a simple decline in relevance. #stephencolbert #thelateshow #thelateshowwithstephencolbert
