Some of the specific details are hazy. Maybe Brooks Brothers came up with the button down in 1896 before releasing it in 1900? Maybe Lacoste invented the tennis shirt a little sooner? I'm sure somebody will correct me on some detail in the comments, and I welcome that.

But if you're going to do a video about the history of a garment, why wouldn't you look it up first?

He came so close to getting the point. He understands what they invented to make playing polo easier. He understands that polo shirts were used for tennis. But they were used for tennis before the war, and before they were used for any other sport. They were invented for tennis, by a tennis player, and called tennis shirts for over 40 years before anybody thought to associate them with polo.

Ralph Lauren saw a market opening and a marketing angle. It caught fire and changed our language. It did not change the history of the garments before that point. Brooks Brothers holds its trademark (I'm not sure how those two manage to coexist). You can still call them tennis shirts, people won't be too confused. And "golf polo" has its own, hideous connotations now in 2026. Please don't go for that plastic BS.

And please don't put a giant contrasting logo on your shirt collars.
