When you think of Afghanistan, you think of Muslims—understandable, since it’s been a Muslim-majority land for centuries. But until a little over a century ago, there was a region, known today as Nuristan, that was home to a non-Muslim population. Because of this, the surrounding Muslims called the area “Kafiristan”—the land of non-believers. Let me tell you its history.
