“Having cancer made me realize how important the people around me are, how strong I can be even in the hardest moments, and how to live my life more intentionally,” commented Shannon Smitley, a melanoma survivor and longtime ACS volunteer. “I think one of the biggest things any cancer survivor and caregiver can learn from a cancer diagnosis is that you truly never know what someone is going through.”

Six years after her cancer diagnosis, Shannon remains vigilant with her doctor appointments and understands how fortunate she is that her cancer was caught early.

“Wear your sunscreen every day, whether it’s sunny or cloudy, raining or snowing,” she stated. “Don’t use a tanning bed and – most importantly – ask your doctor or dermatologist about any spots that start to appear or just don’t look quite right.”
