The second I saw this PR from @Patrick Ta Beauty beauty queens, I immediately thought of @Paintedbyesther 👀 so let’s get into it… What Patrick Ta just did here is REALLY interesting because he essentially commercialized an entire application technique into a new product category: “Transition Blush.” Over the last few years, we’ve watched artists like Painted by Esther help popularize bringing blush all the way into the under eye area using bright pink correctors, concealers, and brightening powders. We actually just went to her masterclass a few days ago with Kosas (more on that soon) and learned all about it. And now Patrick enters the chat with a full 3-step system of brighten, blush, blur. Which of course I wanted to demo for you all here! From a product development perspective, it’s honestly smart. The powders are intentionally sheerer than his original blushes and traditional blushes in general, because they’re designed to sit under the eye without overpowering the complexion. There is also cornstarch in the formula which creates more blur compared to his original powder blushes, something we’re actually starting to see more across the industry in general due to talc needing to be replaced. But the bigger burning conversation for me personally is this: Does commercializing a technique mean owning it? Especially when artists like Painted by Esther are so synonymous with helping popularize this look online. Does Patrick Ta now own this by therefore owning and trademarking the category?
