The quirky hybrid sport, invented in 2011 by American chess master and entrepreneur Etan Ilfeld, follows the normal rules of chess.⁣
⁣
However, the catch is that players must submerge themselves underwater for their turn, and make a move on a single breath. ⁣
⁣
Played at the bottom of a pool, specialized boards and chess pieces are used relying on weights and magnetics to prevent any unwanted movements. ⁣
This year, the diving chess winners were awarded 10,000 Polish złoty, or just over $2700. ⁣
