The debate surrounding transgender athletes in high school sports is once again taking center stage ahead of the CIF State Track and Field Championships in Clovis.

At the center of the controversy is 17-year-old AB Hernandez, a transgender student-athlete from Jurupa Valley High School in Riverside County, who is set to compete at the state finals on May 30.

The issue gained national attention during last year’s championships after Hernandez earned medals in three events — tying for first place in the high jump alongside two other athletes, placing first in the triple jump, and second in the long jump.

The performances sparked protests, political reaction, and a broader national debate over fairness and inclusion in girls' sports.

In response, the California Interscholastic Federation updated competition procedures, allowing athletes to share podium placements and medals in events involving transgender competitors. The policy remains in place this season and was recently seen, during the CIF Southern Section Championships, where another athlete shared the first-place podium with Hernandez in the high jump.

Hernandez’s mother, Nereyda Hernandez, has publicly criticized the policy, saying on social media she believes the rule specifically targets her daughter.
