Singita Kwitonda sits on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, with views of Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes from your bedroom window. The suites are stunning, with indoor and outdoor fireplaces, glass-enclosed outdoor showers, heated plunge pools and design details crafted by Rwandan artisans.

To me, what really makes this place extraordinary is the bigger purpose behind it.

The lodge sits on 178 acres of former agricultural land that Singita purchased to help create a critical buffer zone between local farms and gorilla habitat. Over time, that land will be reforested and folded back into Volcanoes National Park, physically expanding the range available to Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. And of course, the experience Singita provides is flawless. Trekking gear is available for guests to use (if you don’t want to pack your own, which saves a lot of weight if you’re doing a safari after and only have a small duffle!) a delicious lunch is packed for you, and even your boots and trekking gear cleaned at the end of your trip.

I love when luxury is not only beautiful, but also rooted in place and connected to something much bigger than the stay itself.
