I’ve now done two gorilla trekking experiences this year, and while I have many thoughts to share (more on that soon) I wanted to start with a few important things to know before you go… as Gorilla trekking is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world! With that said, it’s also one worth understanding properly before you book.

A few things to know:

1. Every trek is different. Some groups get lucky and reach the gorillas fairly quickly, some hike 3-4 hours (and some even longer!) before finding them. You’re assigned a family based on your ability level (also factoring in who else is trekking that day.)
2. Masks are required on every trek. This started during Covid, but researchers realised it also helped reduce the spread of other illnesses that gorillas are especially susceptible to. You don’t wear them during the hike up- just in the one hour you’re with the gorillas.
3. Guides keep you at least 10 metres from the gorillas. That said, the gorillas don’t know those are the rules and they often come closer on their own.
4. In Rwanda, you’re trekking at altitude, often starting around 8,000 feet, and it can be physically demanding. It’s an incredible experience, but not necessarily an easy one!
5. Once you reach the gorillas, you’re allowed one hour with them. And trust me, that hour goes very quickly. If you’re able to do more than one trek, I would absolutely recommend it.

While not the easiest, it’s such an incredible experience that’s absolutely worth the effort (locking eyes with these faces transforms something inside you!) If gorilla trekking is on your list, get in touch. We’d love to help you plan your own once-in-a-lifetime experience that’s bespoke to you. 🦍
