🚧 What’s happening on General de Gaulle, and why it matters for Algiers 🎥 @CreoleSky Aerial If you’ve been navigating around the construction on the General de Gaulle corridor on the West Bank, here’s what’s actually going on. The drainage work is part of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA), Algiers Subbasin “SELA 72.2”, a federally funded project led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans. The goal: Reduce flooding in the heart of Algiers by upgrading the General de Gaulle drainage canal to handle a 10-year storm, roughly 9 inches of rain in 24 hours. Here’s what’s being built: → A 45-foot-wide, 5-foot-deep concrete flume (a lined channel) along the canal to increase capacity and stop erosion → 424 concrete piles driven as part of the structural work → Extension of the flume from Behrman Place to the Algiers Outfall Canal under a $28.9M contract awarded in July 2024 to Omega Foundation Services Holiday Drive bridge update: The James W. Hibben Memorial Bridge at Holiday Drive has been closed in both directions. The old bridge will eventually be demolished and replaced, the canal hardening requires an entirely new structure. This is part of a larger ~$550 million SELA drainage package for the West Bank, paired with pump station and outfall improvements. #Algiers #NewOrleans #WestBank #SELA
