A Portland startup just moved AI into the ocean.

While everyone fights over chips and power grids, Panthalassa raised $140 million to build AI data centers that run entirely off ocean waves. 

No fuel. No power grid. No land.

Here's the actual machine they built:

An 85-meter structure — taller than the Statue of Liberty — shaped like a giant lollipop. The stem sits underwater. A sphere floats on top. Inside that sphere: an AI server. The ocean water cools it for free. The waves push the structure up and down all day, spinning a turbine inside the stem, generating the electricity that runs everything.

No engines. No motors. Nothing mechanical to break in the middle of the sea.

Every AI you use right now — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude — runs on land-based data centers burning through electricity and wasting fresh water just to stay cool.

As AI demand grows, that's becoming a real problem. Out in the ocean, that problem disappears. The nodes connect back to land through Starlink.

Commercial launches are planned for 2027. In two years, the AI you're using might literally run off ocean waves.
