The reality is that in most circumstances it is not safe to go climbing with your toddler without a third adult. For us this meant we only went when we could find childcare that lined up with our free time, which wasn’t very often.

Sometimes we’d go with childfree friends and take turns, but if I’m being honest, that doesn’t always work out super well since the juggling of naps and time constraints is so specific in this chapter of life.

Last year I made a new mom friend (Hi, Tara 🙋🏼‍♀️) who was also a climber and we started by making time to go solo. Then this spring we said, what if we brought everyone together and went on a climbing trip to the desert? Two families. Two toddlers. But also two sets of grown ups. Everyone on the same page. Let me tell you, it was life changing.

Don’t get me wrong, the pace is slower. It’s chaotic. Your bags are way heavier haha. But it’s climbing, and it’s climbing *as a family*. It feels amazing to actually get to include the kiddos and have them grow up in a world where days like this are normal.

We are still learning as we go but if there’s anything I’ve learned so far it’s that climbing with a toddler is a team sport.
