This National Reconciliation Week, the South Metro Junior Football League reaffirms its commitment to reconciliation. National Reconciliation Week exists to advance reconciliation between First Nations Australians and non-First Nations Australians. The 2026 theme, All In, calls for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day.

We recognise the significant contributions of First Nations people to our game and the powerful role Australian Football plays in bringing communities together.

The SMJFL is dedicated to providing all participants with a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. We have a strong history of inclusion and advocacy for First Nations people, including delivering the STK Academy since 2017 and launching our Reconciliation Action Plan in 2022. Last night, almost 200 SMJFL players took to the field wearing our Interleague jumper that our teams have proudly worn since 2023. The artwork on this jumper is by former SMJFL player PJ Martin, who is from the Northern Territory, Tiwi Islands, Bathurst Island Wurrumiyanga and Bulman/Weemol Community Central Arnhem Land.

As part of our ongoing commitment, we recently partnered with Aunty Katrina Amon, St Kilda’s First Nations Development Manager, to support communities in the Northern Territory. We arranged for a collection of surplus footballs to be given to the community at the Saints v Gold Coast game on the 9th of May in Darwin, and communities in Katherine who continue to rebuild after devastating floods. With the support of the Saints, the footballs were handed out directly to young people who would benefit from them.

The SMJFL is committed to reconciliation and to driving real change for First Nations Australians through the game we love.
