Raise your hand if you've ever rearranged your whole schedule because you thought it was the only way your child would be able to participate 🙋‍♀️

Yep, same.

Under Section 504 and IDEA, your child with a disability has the legal right to participate in school sponsored activities like field trips alongside their peers. And if your child needs support to do that safely, the SCHOOL is responsible for providing it.

That means if your child needs a paraprofessional, a nurse, or any other support to attend a field trip, the school needs to figure that out. Not you.

You are absolutely welcome to go if parents are invited. But it cannot be a condition of your child attending.

Here is what you can do to make sure that happens:

✨If your child has an IEP or 504 plan, ask for field trip participation and the supports needed to be explicitly addressed in the document.

✨ If the school asks you to attend, respond in writing. Let them know your child has the right to participate with appropriate supports in place and ask them to outline how they plan to provide those supports without you.

✨ And if the school pushes back, you can file a complaint with your state’s Office for Civil Rights. You don’t need a lawyer to do it.

Your child deserves to go on the field trip. And you don't have to be available to make it happen.

Did you know this?!
