What I’ve learned from 20 years of keeping a training log...

~11,000 hours of training has taught me a lot. Keeping detailed logs through all of it has allowed me to track when I felt good, when I didn’t, what worked, and what didn’t.

In a new series of posts, I’ll break down some of my biggest takeaways - what worked for me, what I’d keep the same, and what I would change if I could go back and do it all again.

What worked:

1️⃣ Enjoying whatever it was I was doing. Whether it was running, XC skiing, lifting weights, roller skiing, road cycling, mountain biking, hiking, etc.. I always made sure I was truly enjoying it most of the time. If I wasn’t, I’d switch activities for a bit to give myself a break.

2️⃣ Taking 2-4 weeks completely off each year. Sometimes consecutive weeks, sometimes spread out in the off season. This allows both your mind and body to get refreshed and motivated.

What I would change:

1️⃣ Mobility. Yoga, stretching, foam rolling, etc.. One of the most underrated performance enhancers, and one I wish I would have started in my teens.

2️⃣ Lifting weights more frequently at a younger age. I didn’t really start getting into weight lifting until I was 19-20 years old. If I could go back, I would have started consistently lifting around 15-16 years old.

Stay tuned for more.
