#Statement: Two years ago, as a freshman at the University of Michigan, moving in and moving out meant an epic 18-hour journey across the country with a van full of everything I owned. Now, as my junior year comes to a close, I find myself missing the promise of a long road trip. While I am grateful to not have to move in and out of my current college house, fond memories of those long hours remind me of how satisfying it was to have such a journey waiting for me, signifying the end of my academic year.

I have always harbored a love for road trips. As a child, my family journeyed to upstate New York from my hometown in Colorado to visit extended family every summer. While my siblings moaned and groaned about having to hole up in the family SUV for more than 20 hours, I always experienced a curious sort of excitement. I think what most enticed me was the idea of having all of that free time to read, color or do whatever my heart desired. But despite all of my plans of movie-watching, game-playing and book-reading, I ended up plugging my earbuds into my pre-loaded iPod nano and staring out the window for the majority of the drive. The drive through Kansas, Nebraska and so on doesn’t have much to offer in terms of views unless you’re a big fan of cornfields, but I still found myself content with just watching the world go by.
