The first doctor in my family. To God be the glory! Even now, writing those words feels surreal. On May 20, 2026, I was officially hooded, a historic moment in my life. As a first-generation student and immigrant from Ghana, this achievement represents generations of sacrifice, faith, perseverance, and dreams far greater than my own. I came to this country at one year old, never fully understanding the sacrifices my parents made so I could have opportunities they never did. Today, I stand as a testimony to what can happen when courage, community, and prayer are passed from one generation to the next. I still vividly remember opening a large envelope in a grocery store in New Jersey and learning I had been selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar, receiving 10 years of educational funding. That was the moment I realized a PhD was possible for me. From the University of Virginia, to Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, to the University of Washington School of Public Health, and finally Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, every step of this journey shaped me into the person I am today. Although I earned my PhD in December 2025, this spring’s commencement marked the completion of a dream I have carried since the fourth grade. This hood represents more than a degree. It is a symbol of resilience, legacy, and the power of prayer. To every future graduate, especially first-generation students, immigrants, and those still trying to see themselves in spaces they were never taught to imagine for themselves: keep going. I never imagined I would one day be in this position, and that is exactly why I want you to know it is possible. Some accomplishments change your life. Others change the trajectory of generations.
