## Caption

Trees get most public credit for producing oxygen, while oceanic plankton receive less attention. Scientifically, microscopic marine phytoplankton perform photosynthesis and generate a large share of Earth’s oxygen, often estimated at about half or more. Trees remain important, but the image highlights the overlooked role of ocean life in supporting atmospheric oxygen.
