## Caption

Marine phytoplankton are estimated to produce around 50% to 70% of Earth’s oxygen through photosynthesis, despite being microscopic organisms floating in oceans. These algae absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and form the base of marine ecosystems. Much of the oxygen currently present in Earth’s atmosphere exists because ancient cyanobacteria oxygenated the planet billions of years ago during the Great Oxidation Event, permanently reshaping Earth’s climate and chemistry.
