What I love most about Carnaval is how deeply it is rooted in joy.
Y’all see the costumes, music, and dancing but Carnaval is also rooted in a history of resistance and cultural preservation. After emancipation formerly enslaved Africans in Trinidad transformed Carnaval into a celebration of freedom and expression. Music, movement, and masquerade to reclaim space while celebrating. Yesterday we were reminded that we do not need permission to take up space. To dance. To laugh. To be free in our bodies and connected to community. There is something powerful about being surrounded by thousands of people choosing joy at the same time. Joy is not separate from healing. Joy reminds us that we belong, that we are alive, and that celebration is also part of our story. This is why I stay coming back year after year. 💜💙
