Lilian Gilbreth (1878-1972) best known as the matriarch in "Cheaper by The Dozen" earned a PhD in industrial engineering and was the first female professor in #purduengineering 

After her husband's death in 1924, she supported 11 surviving children as a single mother working as an engineer but shifting to applications in #homeeconomics because of sexism in the field. 

#feministscience scholars have criticized portrayals of Gilbreth in the Cheaper by the Dozen books and movies as erasing her work as an engineer.
