The glass eel isn’t a species — it’s a life stage, and the physics behind its transparency is genuinely remarkable.

Juvenile eels of species like Anguilla anguilla pass through a larval phase called the leptocephalus stage before metamorphosing into the glass eel stage. During this transition, the body achieves near-total optical transparency — not through magic, but through precision biological engineering.

Transparency in living tissue is extraordinarily difficult to achieve. Most biological structures scatter or absorb light due to differences in refractive index between cellular components, organelles, and surrounding fluid. Glass eels sidestep this through several mechanisms:

	•	Melanophore suppression — pigment-producing cells are largely inactive, eliminating the primary source of light absorption
	•	High water content in muscle and connective tissue reduces the refractive index mismatch between cells and the surrounding medium
	•	Minimal myoglobin in muscle fibers removes another major absorber of visible light
