## Caption

RSI (Rapid Sequence Induction/Intubation) - you've probs been apart of quite a few of these but it still is nerve-wracking every time. 

Here's a little insight into what we, as CRNA's are thinking. The second that stat airway call overhead comes, we're running through a mental checklist that has nothing to do with the equipment. It's the patient.

What's their pressure doing? What's their EF? A hypotensive patient and propofol is a bad combination. We're making that call in about 4 seconds.

Succinylcholine or rocuronium? Sounds like a preference. It's not. We're scanning for hyperkalemia, burns, crush injuries, prolonged immobility, neuromuscular disease. Any of those and succinylcholine is off the table. We need to know that before we push.

What's the airway looking like? Mallampati, mouth opening, neck mobility, neck masses, airway swelling or bleeding.  You've seen us do that quick assessment at the bedside. That's us deciding if plan A is realistic and what plan B is if it's not.

All of this you'll learn in CRNA school, but next time the CRNA comes to intubate your patient, talk to them afterwards, ask them why they chose the drugs they did. Pay attention to what questions they ask you before intubating. Each one has a purpose.
