Most people associate CHANEL with its strongest codes: the tweed jacket, pearls, the black dress, camellias, beige and black, restraint, polish. The kind of bourgeois elegance that has been imprinted on us so clearly and oh so beautifully that it almost becomes the whole story.

What I love about Matthieu_Blazy is that he is truly broadening what CHANEL means for today. It’s the job, it’s the assignment. It was crystal clear in his debut show and he pushes it even further in his first Metiers d’art collection which was first shown in New York and later restaged in Seoul.

Case in point: I instantly fell in love with look 4, a fabulous leopard situation. A rare sighting indeed. It’s not something you immediately associate with the house. Of course animal patterns existed here and there (SS07HC, FW09HC with Karl and MDA 2023 with Virginie) but they never became one of the dominant CHANEL codes.

In January, he showed me these two images of Gabrielle Chanel wearing leopard in the mid-1920s which came up during his research. Something shifted for me.

There she was. Not as the monochrome myth we inherited but as a woman with instinct. A woman who understood that elegance could also have appetite and a bite. That it could be sensual, sharp and a little dangerous.

This side of her feels almost forgotten perhaps even lost from the very many narratives over the decades.

When I visited le19M in Paris last month, I kept thinking about those photos and how an archive is never really asleep. Some things just wait for the right hands to wake them up again.

And at Lesage that is exactly what happened.

Leopard didn’t come back as a simple print. That would have been lazy. It came back as tweed. Handwoven. I was graciously shown at le19m how it was made, yarn by yarn, thread by thread with a multidimensional texture… soft and wild at the same time. Perfectly imperfect.

Just a reminder that the house has always had more sides than the official story sometimes allows.

I love it when FASHION does this. When it makes you look again at something you thought you already knew.

Leopard was always there.
It just needed to be rewoven.
