EDM might have more momentum in the underground than rap 😳

Look at who’s breaking through… 2hollis went from opening for Ken Carson to becoming one of the defining artists of this new era by blending rage rap, hardstyle, dance-pop, and EDM into something that barely fits traditional rap at all.

Snow Strippers have built a massive crossover audience with fans of Lil Uzi Vert, Destroy Lonely, Bladee, and the wider Opium ecosystem, proving that electronic music and underground rap audiences are becoming the same audience.

The festival world is starting to reflect it too. Summer Smash, the biggest independent rap festival in America, booked Skrillex as a headliner while also bringing in artists like ISOxo, Whethan, and 2hollis. A few years ago that would have sounded insane. Today it feels completely normal.

You can hear the shift all over the internet. BKTHERULA linked with Whethan on “I GO PUNK.” Fakemink’s biggest songs like “Fever” and “Easter Pink” pull heavily from bloghouse and dance music. The Slayr, Lucy Bedroque, kuru, and Prettifun circles all borrow from trance, EDM, and club music instead of traditional trap. Even a lot of what gets called “rap” now is built around electronic drops, rave synths, and festival-ready production.

The interesting part is that this doesn’t feel like rap disappearing. It feels like rap is being absorbed into something bigger. The same way punk, emo, and internet culture collided to create the SoundCloud era, today’s underground is being shaped by a collision between rap and dance music. The kids in the mosh pits haven’t changed, but the soundtrack has.

What are your thoughts on this wave? Do you agree it’s bigger than rap now?
