China has launched artificial human embryo models into space in a groundbreaking attempt to understand whether humans could someday reproduce beyond Earth.

The tiny structures are not real embryos and cannot grow into babies. They were created from human stem cells to imitate the earliest stages of human development, giving scientists a way to safely study how life begins in the harsh environment of space.

The samples were carried to China’s Tiangong space station aboard the Tianzhou-10 mission. Once in orbit, researchers allowed them to grow for five days inside special chambers designed to recreate important moments in early pregnancy.

One group of samples mimicked implantation, the stage when an embryo attaches to the uterus. Another recreated gastrulation, a crucial phase when cells begin organizing into the tissues and organs that eventually form the human body.

At the same time, identical samples remained on Earth so scientists can compare how the space-grown structures developed under microgravity and cosmic radiation. Automated systems aboard the station replaced nutrients daily before the samples were frozen for their return journey home.

Scientists have long suspected that reproduction in space could be extremely difficult. Microgravity may confuse sperm cells, radiation can damage DNA, and previous animal experiments have produced mixed results. Some mouse embryos developed normally in orbit, while other studies showed serious developmental problems.

This experiment will not answer whether humans can safely have children in space, but it marks one of the first serious attempts to investigate the biology behind future colonies on the Moon or Mars.
