18 years ago today, the Universal Studios backlot was forever changed.

In the early morning hours of June 1, 2008, a massive fire swept through the studio lot, destroying portions of New York Street, the King Kong Encounter, and the Universal vault. The fire became one of the most significant disasters in the studio’s history and led to major rebuilding efforts across the backlot.
