The Torah forbids tattoos. But what happens when a tattoo becomes an act of memory? 🕯️

For generations, Jewish law has been clear: tattooing the body is prohibited. Yet today, thousands of young Jewish men and women are getting inked — often with Hebrew words, Stars of David, or symbols tied directly to their heritage. For many, it’s the most Jewish thing they’ve ever done.

And then there’s the other tattoo. The one that was never chosen. The number burned into the arms of Holocaust survivors by the Nazis. A mark of dehumanization that became, for many survivors, a permanent wound they carried in silence.
When a granddaughter tattoos “memory” on her arm to honor her grandmother’s story, is that a violation of Jewish law, or the most profound act of Jewish continuity imaginable? The debate is real, it’s generational, and it’s happening in Jewish families right now.
