Though they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs support more than 25% of all marine life. Built by colonies of tiny creatures called polyps, these massive underwater formations are among the largest living structures on Earth.

Around the world, coral reef habitats face severe threats from rising ocean temperatures and acidification, as well as localized pressures from overfishing, pollution, and physical destruction.

However, there is hope. When strong marine protections are put in place, reefs can bounce back remarkably fast, making them more resilient to future stressors.

Swipe through to see just a few of the reefs we've documented during The Global Expedition, our five-year exploration of the tropical Pacific dedicated to supporting communities and governments in ocean conservation.
