With the 19th overall pick in the 2013 draft, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected left winger, Kerby Rychel. Playing for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL, Rychel had an impressive 74 points in 68 games in his sophomore season and improved even more in his draft year with 87 points in the same amount of games played. Following his final year of juniors, he had 33 points in 51 games for the Blue Jackets’ AHL team, the then Springfield Falcons. Due to an injury-riddled Blue Jackets team, Rychel got called up to the NHL and had 3 points in 5 games that season. The following season, Rychel ended up splitting the season between the NHL and minors and had 27 points in 37 games in the AHL and played 32 games with the Blue Jackets, only managing to get 9 points. That same season, reports surfaced that Rychel requested a trade from the Blue Jackets because he felt he was not getting a fair amount of playing time.

He was not traded until after that season, where he was sent to Toronto and never played a game for the Leafs but had 52 points in 73 games in his first season with the Marlies, their AHL affiliate. Rychel began the 2017-18 season with the Marlies but would eventually be moved to the Canadiens, getting 2 points in 4 games and the rest of the time was spent in the minors. Instead of re-signing Rychel, he was traded to the Calgary Flames but the pattern throughout his career would repeat and played just 2 games with the team and spent the rest of his contract in the minors. For the 2019-20 season, he signed in the KHL and had his contract terminated after getting 0 points in 7 games. Rychel decided to come back to the AHL on a deal with the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes; but only played 6 games before getting suspended by the team and removed from the roster.

Those 32 games Rychel played for the Blue Jackets would be the longest stretch of time he spent in the NHL so far in his career. Could his lack of NHL success stem from potentially being buried in the Columbus line up early in his career? Or does his trend with other NHL teams throughout his career paint a better picture?
