With the 8th overall pick in the 2007 draft, the Boston Bruins selected forward Zach Hamill from the Everett Silvertips of the WHL. To begin his junior career, he played 4 games for the Silvertips before being sent down to the Port Coquitlam Buckaroos, which is a team part of the now named Pacific Junior Hockey League; the 3rd tier junior league of the Ontario Hockey Association and dominated with 61 points in 39 games. The 2004-05 season was his first full year playing in the WHL where his playmaking skills came to the forefront with 33 points in 57 games, 25 of which were assists. Hamill continued to improve over the next two seasons and finished the 2006-07 season with 93 points in 69 games, along with claiming several Silvertips franchise records. Shortly after the draft, he signed his entry level contract with the Bruins and spent the 2007-08 season back in the WHL and was called up to the AHL Providence Bruins once the junior season was over. He finished his junior career with 262 points in 250 games, all with the Silvertips.

In his first professional season (2008-09), he had 26 points in 65 games and would play one game for the Bruins the following season where he had an assist before spending the rest of the season in the AHL. Over the next two seasons this trend would continue and in the 2011-12 season, he played a career high 16 NHL games and registered 2 points. Eventually in May 2012, he was traded to the Washington Capitals and was sent directly to the minors due to the 2012-13 lockout. Later that season he was traded to the Florida Panthers, where he would only play for their then AHL team, the San Antonio Rampage. That same season, Hamill was loaned to a different AHL team. For the 2013-14 season, Hamill signed with the Vancouver Canucks but failed to make the pro roster out of training camp and was once again assigned to the AHL before leaving for Europe that same season. Hamill has since bounced between various leagues in Europe and had more success than in North America. He finished his North American career with 4 points in 20 NHL games and 192 points in 349 games.
