With the 12th overall pick in the 2012 draft, the Buffalo Sabres selected forward Mikhail Grigorenko out of the QMJHL. Grigorenko had 85 points in 58 games in his first junior season with the Quebec Remparts, which was very impressive especially considering it was his first competitive season in North America. Such a great season landed him at #3 on the NHL Central Scouting Bureau top 10 North American skaters list, one above the second highest ranked center, Alex Galchenyuk (3rd overall, Montreal Canadiens). Shortly after the draft, he signed his entry-level contract with the Sabres but the lockout delayed the beginning of the 2012-13 season so he began the year in juniors.

Once the lockout ended that season, Grigorenko was invited to the Sabres’ training camp and made the roster coming out of camp. Buffalo management decided to keep him on the team after he played 9 games, thus burning a year off his ELC only to send him back to the Remparts anyway after he played his 22nd game of the season. The following season, he made the Sabres roster out of training camp again but new personnel in the front office, and 3 points in 18 games, resulted in him being sent back down to juniors again and put up 39 points in 23 games. No longer junior eligible, Grigorenko split the 2014-15 season between the Sabres and their AHL team, the Rochester Americans. He actually had decent numbers with the Americans that season, getting 36 points in 43 games but floundered in the NHL with 6 points in 25 games. At the 2015 draft, Grigorenko was included in the trade that sent him to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Ryan O’Reilly and Jamie McGinn.

Despite putting up a career high 27 points in 74 games with his first season in Colorado and 23 points in 75 games the following year, his offensive skill from juniors and the AHL still struggled to translate at the NHL level. Lacking the general play style of a tougher, more aggressive bottom 6 forward, he left for the KHL where his offense has greatly recovered. After a brief and unsuccessful stop in Columbus this past season, he is back in the KHL and as of this posting has 76 points in 249 NHL games.
