With the 4th overall pick in the 2012 draft, the New York Islanders selected defenseman Griffin Reinhart. The left-shooting defenseman was ranked 10th in North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau and was the 6th highest defenseman behind Ryan Murray, Morgan Rielly, Cody Ceci, Olli Määttä and Jacob Trouba. Murray was selected at 2nd overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets and Rielly was selected right after Reinhart at 5th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Standing at 6’ 4” at the age of 18, Reinhart was seen as a big two-way defenseman that already had NHL size despite not being the best skater compared to the other defensemen that were still available. That said, he had a successful junior career with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL putting up 111 points in 209 games and won the WHL Championship twice. Reinhart made the Islanders roster after the 2014-2015 training camp and played 8 games before being sent down to their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and played the rest of the season with them, managing to get 22 points in 59 games in his first professional season. That one season must have been all the Islanders organization needed to see because they traded him to the Edmonton Oilers during the 2015 draft for a first-round pick (16th overall) and a second-round pick (33rd overall).

Reinhart split the following season between the Oilers (29 games, 1 point, +/- -6) and their AHL team, the Bakersfield Condors (30 games, 10 points, +/- 2). For the 2016-17 season, Reinhart spent the entire season in the AHL and continued to play in the minors until the 2019-20 season, where he played for the Kunlun Red Star of the KHL. He is still playing after a season in the DEL, he is set to play in the EIHL for the Belfast Giants for the 2021-22 season. Reinhart finished his North American career with 2 points in 37 NHL games and 81 points in 278 AHL games.

The Islanders managed to flip Reinhart while his value was still high and turned that 16th overall pick from Edmonton into Mat Barzal, the Islanders’ front office was probably thrilled about landing the trade and even happier when the Boston Bruins passed on Barzal 3 times.
