Nebraska men’s basketball guard Braden Frager is coming off a breakout redshirt freshman season, and head coach Fred Hoiberg believes the Lincoln native still has another level to reach.

Frager averaged nearly 12 points per game while shooting 35% from 3-point range during a season that earned him Big Ten 6 Man of the Year honors. Now, Nebraska’s coaching staff is focused on helping the 6-foot-6 guard become a more complete player.

“I think the biggest growth for Braden is just going to be playmaking, defensively taking a step,” Hoiberg said. “I thought he made huge strides from his redshirt year to his first year of eligibility on the court, but there’s more room to grow with his physical tools and his body. He should be able to be a lockdown defender.”


Frager elevated his play during Nebraska’s NCAA Tournament run, scoring 13 points against Troy, 15 against Vanderbilt and 16 against Iowa.

While his offensive production stood out, Hoiberg emphasized that the next step in Frager’s development will come on the defensive end.

“When you look at what teams are doing now at the highest level, everybody can guard pretty much,” Hoiberg said. “The guys that sometimes maybe score 40 a game aren’t quite the defenders as some of those other guys, but you’ve got to be able to guard at that level. That’s something that Braden, Connor Essegian, Pryce Sandford, all those guys still have room to grow in.”

Frager will work closely with assistant coach Nate Loenser, who oversees Nebraska’s defense. The Cornhuskers finished the 2025-26 season with a top-10 defense nationally, and the coaching staff believes Frager has the potential to become an all-defensive caliber player.

“I think he’d tell you he’s got a lot of room to grow,” Hoiberg said. “That’s the thing about a guy that’s as athletic as he is, that has as high a ceiling as he does — there’s room to grow, and that should give him confidence going into this year.”

As Frager prepares for his sophomore campaign, Nebraska is counting on continued growth from one of its top returning players as the Huskers look to build on last season’s success.
